Is my allergy or asthma medication making me fat?

Weight Loss Fort Wayne IN Vilulu Allergies

Have you ever considered that having allergies or asthma could be the reason you have a difficult time maintaining a healthy weight? It’s true and here’s why:
The posterior hypothalamus plays an important role in weight regulation by using the neurotransmitter histamine. That’s right, the same chemical that can induce symptoms related to allergies and asthma! So when you take a corticosteroid medication it acts as an ANTI-histamine. It might seem great that it reduces your allergy or asthma symptoms, albeit in a counterfeit way, but scientific studies show that administering histamine into the body reduces food intake in animal studies whereas administering histamine blockers stimulates food intake.

That means that from a chemical level, antihistamines make you eat more food. But that’s not all!

The hypothalamus sends information (in the form of hormones) to the pituitary gland, which in turn sends information to the adrenal glands. By blocking histamine, you disrupt how your adrenal glands function too!
The adrenal glands are very small organs that sit atop each kidney. They too produce hormones that have a wide array of different functions and properties. Of special note here is the adrenal hormones that help you burn fat. Turn those hormones off (or even down) and one of the first signs is weight gain, particularly belly fat.

So…not only do you increase your appetite but you prevent your body from effectively burning fat!

“That’s all well and good, but what am I supposed to do?” It all starts with understanding why you have allergies and asthma in the first place. After all, if you didn’t have to take corticosteroids or antihistamines, your body should more naturally be able to regulate your body weight, right?
Have you ever wondered why you have sometimes unbearable allergies, but your neighbor (who is exposed to the same things in the environment) has no trace of allergy problems? Even in scientific studies on identical twins they found that only about 50% of the time did twins have the same allergies. 50% might seem like a lot …until you consider that twins share not just the same environments but usually the same FOODS too.

Could something in your diet be causing your allergies and asthma in the first place?

One thing is for sure, when you give the body what it needs and give it a chance to recover from chemical-laden foods, you have a very high potential of eliminating the need for many medications and can be on your way to that healthy weight you’ve been wanting.
